5 Tips for Landing the Job of Your Dreams
Have you ever thought that your dream job is unattainable? Think again. With the right forethought and preparation, you can make the move. As we're slowly getting back into the swing of things, many of us have realised that life is too short to wait for the dream job to come to us. So if the last year and a bit has helped you refocus and motivated you to put yourself in the best position possible, this is for you.
Have the correct profile
Some people describe LinkedIn as social media without the social. For getting your dream job, don’t disregard it. Update your profile regularly to reflect the skills and experience that will apply to your dream job.
Tailor your CV for the job you want
The first thing an employer will see is your CV, so make sure you do your research and tailor your CV to match the job with that employer. It’s not size does not fit all so get to know as much as possible about the company, their values, and mission statement. Understand the skills needed for that particular role. Then tailor your CV to reflect the skills, experience, and qualities. This will show your dream employer you not only have the skills to do the job, but you understand the company and would be a good fit.
Get networking
Does networking make you nervous? You are not alone. But if you want to land your dream job, networking the right well can help you on your way. It might be difficult to network in real life at the moment, but many business communities are organising virtual coffee events. Don’t shy away from those to make connections.
Dream big, and take action
It’s OK if your dream job sounds quixotic. Perhaps it’s to produce music for Taylor Swift, but you don’t know where to begin. Just start small. In this case, it might mean reaching out to local music recording studios for internships or volunteer positions. Or, it may mean asking a local musician if they’d be interested in working with you on a recording. Watch a series of YouTube videos on recording music to learn the software and skills, then blog about what you’ve learned to further communicate your passion for the industry.
The takeaway is, you need to build your experiences and skills – and be honest with yourself on areas where you’re lacking. Keep your future dreams big, while also taking small, practical actions.
Get ahead of the game
Don’t wait until the stars align. Instead, apply before a position opens. You can reach out to an organisation to let them know you are passionate about their work and interested in an opportunity, no matter if they’re hiring or not. This will set you apart and keep you top of mind for when there are positions available. It’s a different mentality; instead of a scarcity mindset (telling yourself the only jobs out there are the ones listed on Indeed.com right now) it’s a mindset of opportunity and attraction (my dream career exists, and I’m on a journey to discover, connect, and achieve it). Remember, you are more qualified than you realise.
